Bayonne Knife For Life (BKFL)

A Practical “NOTHING FANCY” approach to using the KNIFE!

The goal of BKFL training, is the development of defensive skills utilizing fundamentally sound and practical approaches (taught by a qualified self defense instructor) to edged weapons training for those of us with minimal time to spare. Rather than learning a large number of specific techniques to defend against specific attacks, BKFL focuses on perfecting a few proven techniques and learning how to apply them in a defensive situation. Through this easy-to-learn method, members develop defensive proficiency very quickly (muscle memory) and have both the ability and the confidence to employ their skills after only a brief period of training.

The topics covered in BKFL training include:

  • Knife selection and evaluation
  • Knife carry and deployment
  • Knife grips
  • Identifying and evaluating weapon attributes (Thrusting, Slashing, Chopping, Impact)
  • Bridging from unarmed tactics to the deployment and use of the knife (Impact / Edged)
  • Striking techniques and angles of attack
  • Checking skills
  • Reflex training drills that quickly develop spontaneous defensive reactions
  • Footwork and Movement
  • Verbal Commands
  • Ten Commandments of Self Defense
  • Effective unarmed defenses,
  • Coordinating empty-hand striking and “live hand” checking, redirecting, passing
  • Combination cutting and the concept of cutting on retraction
  • Ballistic cutting and thrusting tactics
  • Advantages and disadvantages of the reverse grip
  • Reverse-Grip partner training drills to develop conditioned defensive reflexes
  • Hooking, redirecting and trapping with the reverse-grip
  • Knife defenses from disadvantaged positions (mugging, grappling, rolling, falls)
  • Knife disarming tactics
  • Using an attacker's weapon against him
  • Employing locks and disarms
  • Environmental awareness and sources of improvised weapons

Because BKFL Believes In The Basic Right of Self Defense! BKFL adheres to a professional commitment of providing responsible, ethical self-defense solutions, thus, BKFL also emphasizes the concepts of self defense awareness, avoidance, and de-escalation. When these concepts are combined with the broad range of physical skills and drills presented during the course of training, the BKFL member will have a solid edged weapon foundation for practical and usable  self-protection.
